Info from Sue Griffiths - England Field Trip

Below is an email I received from our NGMC member, Sue.

Hi Sally,

Thanks for all the information you send from the US. We hope you have a happy time at the last meeting on Monday, good wishes to everyone for the summer.

The photos Reg sent are of a field trip with geology students yesterday 16/May, to the north Norfolk coast. Walton on the Naze takes a battering from east coast storms, only one side of the town has sea defences photo 6237.

Our group is on the top of the cliff standing on what is left of a concrete hardstand, the rest fell away this winter. photo 6242.

The beach has a wave cut platform of London clay, over 50 million years old and full of tropical fossils, palm seeds, wood, sharks teeth. The red sands on top of the clay are 2 million years old and from there to the top of the cliff are glacial sediments. The whole lot slides down as waves undercut the clay and water percolates down through from the cliff top.

The round dark object is a World War 2 pillbox, for sentries guarding the coast as we are not far from France here. This shows how much coastal retreat has taken place in the last few years.

All the best for packing up and travelling to Wyoming, Reg is coming out
31 May and I'll be out for 3 weeks from June 14. My work timetable is changing next year and we won't be out til after Christmas but will be staying until early May- I'm looking forward to those trips out with you.

love from Sue
